SLT is an abbreviation for selective laser trabeculoplasty. This is a laser treatment which was developed to decrease your pressure and to prevent the progression of your glaucoma. During the procedure the doctor focuses the laser beam on the small channels inside your eye which drain the fluid, with the help of a contact lens. The laser dilates the small channels and the drainage of the aqueous fluid increases, which results in lowering the eye pressure. The laser is effective in 4 out of 5 patients, and it can be repeated several times. Sometimes you will be able to stop the drops you are using for glaucoma or decrease them. The procedure lasts only for a few minutes and you might have small pain. It has no side effects other than minimal inflammation, which will be prevented by use of eye drops.
The laser was DONATED by AVA, a German NGO & also supporters in the UK.
